'Power Ballad' showcases actor Paul Rudd's singing side
When Rotten Tomatoes grants a 98% to a film, you can be sure you are in for a treat. The newly released flm 'Power Ballad' definitely showcases various shades of the lead actors, Paul Rudd and singer, Nick Jonas. The film certainly starts on the right note. It begins with a feel good song, 'Celebration' by Kool and the Gang. Rudd plays, Rick, a pretty washed out, wedding singer. His band is coaxed in to offering the more famous Danny, (Jonas) a singer who has just left a boy band, to sing one song on their set. After a thunderous applause, Rick and Danny spend the latter part of the evening sharing music and unreleased tunes.
While Danny generously gifts a classic, not to mention exquisitely crafted guitar to his new friend Rick, he chooses to use Rick's song and claims it as his own. Endearingly Rick hears the now famous song in a mall six months later and is appauled that he hasn't been credited with the same.
What ensues is a battle by the original song writer to prove that he is the creator of a tune that suddenly becomes a mega hit for Danny.
The film is directed by John Carney who brought us 'Once,' with all its good vibrations. With stellar performances, 'Power Ballad' is a sentimental flick with a couple of very good moments. One example is band member Sandy standing up for Rick when he is at his lowest. Rick's Irish wife and daughter also add an emotional angle to the plot.
You can't deny that Rudd has showcased his singing prowess by belting tunes from the 80's such as 'Maneater' and 'Summer of 69.'
Anyone who's been robbed of their ownership rights, can certainly identify with this movie. Note to self: document everything.
The film is showing at Reel Cinemas in Dubai and is distributed by Front Row Filmed Entertainment.

Abi, I really enjoyed reading this review. It flows very naturally and makes the reader want to watch the movie. You have done a lovely job of explaining the story without giving away too much, and I could easily follow the plot from beginning to end.
I particularly liked how you highlighted Paul Rudd's singing side and the theme of a songwriter fighting for recognition. The line "Note to self: document everything" was a nice touch and leaves the reader with something to think about.
What I also liked is that your review feels warm and personal rather than overly technical. It sounds like someone genuinely sharing their thoughts about a film, which makes it enjoyable to read.
